JOHN MCCAIN: CUT THE STRINGS, PUPPETMASTER

And she seemed blind-sided by the question about the Bush doctrine, guessing that Mr. Gibson was asking about Mr. Bush’s “world view.” Mr. Gibson explained later that he wanted to know what she thought of his idea of “anticipatory self-defense.”

Granted, this might not be something that your average hockey mom would know, but it probably is something that a commander-in-chief-in-waiting might have considered.

Ms. Palin appeared as an eager student, someone who has crammed for an exam and was repeating talking points. But she also tried to sound emphatic and serious at the same time she wanted to be friendly, with many interjections of “Charlie.”

Obama In My ‘Hood

Barack Obama had his first official pow-wow with Bill Clinton this afternoon at Clinton’s Harlem office, literally, four blocks from my apartment, on 125th and Lenox Ave.  The two chatted for a few hours and then gave a mini-press conference.  Lots of pundits (like the ones I’m watching on Hardball right now) think Obama kind of screwed the pooch a little in taking so long to woo the Clintons into stumping action.  They’re saying that the Clintons’ best attributes are exactly what Obama’s campaign is missing right now.  They have a proven knack for connecting with middle and rural Americans on topics like social change and economic policy, and many think that Obama’s slowness to appease the Clintons’ egos contributed to their late start in doing just that.

Both McCain and Obama will be in Harlem later tonight to speak at the bipartisan ServiceNation Presidential Candidates Forum at Columbia University.  While both candidates will be interviewed we’ll have to wait until the debates next month to see them go head-to-head.  It airs tonight at 8pm on CNN.
