I’m Through With White Girls–The Post Game
so, ashton and i went to see I’m Through With White Girls, part of the Afro Punk, last nite. the movie was great, it started out slow, and we could only find seats way in front and all the way on the side because the theater was absolutely packed, a good thing, so i didn’t complain so much.
it is a typical romantic comedy but with a little more bite. the main character is a black comic book nerd dude who, after a string of identical failed relationships with white women, sets out to date a black girl. he finds one, with terrible dreadlocks (they have yarn in them or something!). she’s a novelist, she’s quirky (goes to therapy!), most importantly, she’s nearly white–her biggest fear is public speaking because, when she gets excited, she says, she sounds like a valley girl. nothing groundbreaking here, just a nice, cute, and at times very surprisingly funny movie.
ashton and i left early into the q&a afterward, but apparently it got kind of heated afterward. this blogger does a good job with the play-by-play. of course, i wasn’t there, but methinks those folks were getting worked up over nothing. this movie is by no means controversial. rather, the fact that some could drag an overlong discussion out of it (read the link above for when a girl in the audience who said she couldn’t tell her white friends the title of the movie) is a testament to the scarcity of other movies of its kind.
